Soft Bread Rolls (makes 12 rolls)

Ingredients

  • 4 cups (500 g) all-purpose flour
  • 2 ¼ tsp (1 packet) active dry yeast
  • 1 cup (240 ml) warm milk
  • ¼ cup (50 g) sugar
  • ¼ cup (60 g) unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 large egg (optional, for richness)

Optional Topping:

  • Egg wash (1 egg + 1 tbsp milk) for shiny rolls
  • Sesame seeds or poppy seeds

Instructions

  1. Activate yeast: In a small bowl, mix warm milk, sugar, and yeast. Let sit 5–10 minutes until foamy.
  2. Mix dough: In a large bowl, combine flour and salt. Add yeast mixture, melted butter, and egg. Mix until a soft dough forms.
  3. Knead: Knead 8–10 minutes until smooth and elastic (by hand or stand mixer).
  4. First rise: Cover and let dough rise 1–1.5 hours, until doubled.
  5. Shape rolls: Punch down dough, divide into 12 equal pieces, shape into balls, and place on a greased baking sheet.
  6. Second rise: Cover and let rise 30–45 minutes.
  7. Preheat oven: 375°F (190°C). Brush rolls with egg wash and sprinkle seeds if desired.
  8. Bake: 15–20 minutes until golden brown. Cool slightly before serving.

Tips

  • For extra softness, brush warm rolls with butter after baking.
  • Whole wheat flour can replace half the flour for a healthier version.
  • For garlic or herb rolls, add 1–2 tsp dried herbs to the dough or butter topping.
