Shepherd’s pie

Here’s a classic Shepherd’s Pie recipe — hearty, comforting, and perfect for dinner 🥧

Note: Traditional shepherd’s pie uses lamb. If you use beef, it’s technically cottage pie (but equally delicious).

Shepherd’s Pie (serves 4–6)

Ingredients

Mashed Potato Topping

  • 2 lbs (900 g) potatoes, peeled & chopped
  • 4 tbsp butter
  • ½ cup milk or cream
  • Salt & pepper to taste

Meat Filling

  • 1 lb (450 g) ground lamb (or beef)
  • 1 onion, diced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 cup carrots, diced
  • 1 cup peas
  • 2 tbsp tomato paste
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 cup beef or lamb broth
  • 1 tsp thyme or rosemary
  • Salt & pepper

Instructions

  1. Boil potatoes in salted water 15–20 minutes until tender. Mash with butter, milk, salt & pepper.
  2. Brown meat in a large pan over medium heat. Drain excess fat.
  3. Add onion and carrots; cook 5 minutes. Add garlic, cook 30 seconds.
  4. Stir in tomato paste, Worcestershire sauce, herbs, salt & pepper.
  5. Add broth and simmer 10 minutes until thick. Stir in peas.
  6. Spread meat mixture in a baking dish.
  7. Top evenly with mashed potatoes (rough up the top with a fork).
  8. Bake at 400°F (205°C) for 20–25 minutes until golden.
  9. Rest 5 minutes before serving.

Tips for Extra Flavor

  • Add a splash of red wine to the filling
  • Sprinkle cheese on the potato topping
  • Brush potatoes with butter for extra browning
